City, Ottawa contribute to St. Norbert Farmers’ Market expansion

The federal government will contribute $250,000 while the City of Winnipeg will chip in another $121,000 to the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market proposed expansion.

Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification Lynne Yelich and Winnipeg South MP Rod Bruinooge announced the support today under the federal government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

"Our investment in the St. Norbert Community Park and Farmers’ Market will upgrade a tremendous local asset while contributing to the community’s growth and prosperity," Yelich said in a statement.

The money will go to improve the market’s entry, park access and pathways. The seating will also be replaced and the market area’s floor will be upgraded.

Mayor Sam Katz said the city will contribute a total of $121,300 to the $500,898 project.

"The St. Norbert Farmers’ Market showcases the best of the best of products that are made, baked or grown by local vendors and has become a favourite destination for families and out-of-town visitors," Katz said in a statement.

The St. Norbert Foundation and community groups will also contribute to the project.

"These improvements will have a positive impact on the quality of life for St. Norbert residents and visitors to the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market," said Bob Roehle, president of the St. Norbert Foundation.

Last year, Manitoba’s largest outdoor farmers market announced plans to add new indoor and outdoor structures, enhanced vendor spaces, more signage, and improved traffic for pedestrians and vehicles.
