Winnipeg events celebrating Her Majesty

There are several events around Winnipeg Sunday marking the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's coronation. Here's a smattering:

  • While 1,000 boats cruise down London's Thames river Sunday, Winnipeg's dragon boaters will do the same on the Red. Starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Redboine docks, paddlers with the Chemo Savvy breast cancer dragon boat team will set off for an 11-kilometre paddle.
  • The Royal Manitoba Yacht Club is also launching its own flotilla on the Red and Assiniboine rivers Sunday afternoon. Twenty boats will leave the yacht club just north of the Perimeter Highway at about 1 p.m. Sunday with Lt. Gov. Philip Lee and Anita Lee leading the flotilla. The boats should arrive at The Forks at about 2:15 p.m. before carrying on down the Assiniboine to the legislature.
  • A more sombre event takes place at Brookside Cemetery Sunday evening as Lt. Gov. Lee joins Justice Minister Andrew Swan and Mayor Sam Katz for a candlelight service in honour of fallen soldiers. The Diamond Jubilee Candlelight Service of Remembrance starts at 8:30 p.m. when cadets and scouts will begin placing candles on each of the 11,000 graves and monuments in the cemetery.
  • The flotilla down the Thames starts at 8 a.m. local time, but television coverage begins as early as 6 a.m. on some national broadcasters. Visit www.winnipegfreepress.com for online coverage.
