City holding forum on housing Wednesday

The City of Winnipeg is looking for public opinion about housing before it updates its housing policy.

The city plans to hold an open house about housing policy at the University of Winnipeg on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. in room 2M70, which is on the second floor of Manitoba Hall, the city announced in a statement.

"The intent of this policy is to address areas within the jurisdiction of the City of Winnipeg and articulate the City’s responsibilities in working with our federal and provincial partners on policy and programs that support the housing needs of the Winnipeg population," the city said in a statement.

Winnipeg has suffered from a rental-apartment crisis for years, as vacancy rates have hovered at or below one per cent. There have also been concerns all three levels of government are not doing enough to support affordable housing, increase density and stimulate downtown housing.
