City officials say silos in River Heights contravene zoning bylaws

A salt, rock and chemical distributor contravened land-use rules by placing industrial silos alongside a BNSF Railway line in River Heights, city officials say.

In September, Fort Distributors installed eight metal silos along a stretch of rail line in a residential section of River Heights. Neighbours immediately complained to the city.

City property officials have concluded the silos were placed along the track in contravention of zoning bylaws, River Heights-Fort Garry Coun. John Orlikow told reporters this morning.

The city is in the process of sending the distribution company a letter informing them of the breach. Orlikow said he does not know whether the city will order the firm to remove the silos or engage in some other form of legal action.

Fort Distributors has been asked to comment.
