City projected to post modest budget surplus

The City of Winnipeg is on track to post a modest surplus at the end of this year, based on accounting of city spending up to the end of June.

Winnipeg is on track to post a $3.3-million surplus on its $900-million 2012 operating budget, according to figures from June 30, chief financial officer Mike Ruta says in a report to council’s finance committee.

That projection is preliminary and could change by the end of the year. However, it does include a $4.7-million transfer to the city’s snow-clearing reserve and a $1.1-million transfer to the insect-control reserve.

The city did not spray for adult mosquitoes this summer and the end of the winter of 2011-12 was mild.
