City to develop policy on free tickets

Winnipeg city council will look at developing a policy on free tickets.

Mayor Sam Katz said he asked the city clerk's office to look at drafting rules surrounding freebies after the provincial government announced it wants to stop cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats from accepting free tickets for Jets games.

Katz said members of council currently have to declare gifts over a certain amount, but there is no formal policy that governs whether or not they can accept free tickets.

"As a result of everything I've seen I've brought it up with the clerk and we're going to put something in place," he said following this morning's executive policy committee meeting.

Katz said a formal policy will come before council in the near future and he would like to see a broad policy that covers "as much territory" as possible. Katz said he buys his own personal tickets to sporting events and does not know whether members of council have accepted freebies in the past.
