City's downtown parking rates among the best, but climbing fast

Winnipeg motorists still enjoy some of the cheapest downtown parking rates in the country, although rates are also climbing here at one of the fastest paces in the country, according to the result of a new survey by Colliers International.

The commercial real estate firm said the average monthly rate for a parking stall in a covered or underground parkade in downtown Winnipeg was $159.86 in June of this year, when the survey was conducted.

That was the third lowest rate among the 12 Canadian cities surveyed, with only Waterloo ($132.49) and Saskatoon ($157.50) coming in lower. Calgary had the dubious distinction of having the most expensive average monthly rate, at $456.75, while the Canadian average was $241.72.

However, Winnipeg’s rate was also five per cent higher than a year earlier, which was the fourth biggest 12-month gain among the 12 cities.

Montreal was hit with the biggest rate hike, at 11.7 per cent, while Toronto and Vancouver saw their monthly rates decline by 4.8 per cent and 3.5 per cent respectively. The national average increase was 2.7 per cent.
