City's fight against Gypsy moths to target 12,000 homes

Twelve thousand homes in St. Vital will soon be the target of the city's fight against Gypsy moths.

City entomologist Taz Stuart said today an "established population" has been found in the Minnetonka and Pulberry neighbourhoods including St. Vital Park.

Stuart said a plane will begin dumping Btk - a biological organic pest killer - on the area starting next week, weather permitting.

He said homeowners have been notified by letter about the aerial spraying between 5 a.m., to 7:30 a.m.

Stuart said if the population infests the city local garden centres could face federal restrictions on selling their products outside the city.

There are no buffer zones allowed for this spraying.

Meanwhile Stuart said the city will start street spraying for cankerworms on Monday night in Area 50 including Kildonan Park.

Stuart said Winnippeggers can now remove their tree bands from around trees.

And Stuart said while mosquito counts are low - an average of one over 24 traps - the city is still aggressively larviciding up to 40,000 hectares of water in and up to 10 kilometres around the city.
