Clippers punt return team trick play goes viral

A trick play by the Kelvin Clippers junior varsity football team's punt return team in its Winnipeg High School Football League semifinal game last month has become a YouTube sensation.

The play happened in a 32-16 loss to the Vincent Massey Trojans on Oct. 30 at East Side Field when Kelvin's punt returner caught the ball but then punted the ball back over the heads of the Trojans instead of running it back, which is what usually happens on a punt return. A swarm of Kelvin players raced downfield after the ball with one of them grabbing the ball for a touchdown.

Matthew Johnson, one of the Kelvin coaches, uploaded a video of the play which now has more than 50,000 views.

"Yes it is legal," Johnson commented under the video, as amazed viewers questioned why the touchdown was good. "There were five players behind the punter (on the returning team) when we punted it back, and therefore they were 'onside.' One of the fastest players on our team ran around the outside and was able to 'scoop n' score!' Kudos to our kick-returner/punter who was able to execute it perfectly!!"
