OPP warning drivers to be cautious near Kenora

Police have warned drivers to be cautious when driving on Highway 17 west of Kenora.

"Highway is slush covered due to heavy snowfall mixed with rain," said a press release from the Kenora detachment of Ontario Provincial Police about 11 a.m. "Caution is recommended if you have to travel in this area."

A weather front is currently dropping rain and snow in parts of southern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada issued a severe weather advisory for southeastern Manitoba, particularly the areas around Pinawa and Seven Sisters.

An intense low-pressure system that moved in from northern Minnesota is bringing in plenty of rain and cold air. That rain is changing to snow, with amounts of anywhere from 10 to 20 centimetres by the end of the day.

The winds will be howling, with gusts of up to 70 km/h.

In Winnipeg, there will likely be some of the dreaded white stuff on your lawn tonight or Friday.

An Environment Canada forecast for later today calls for flurries, at times heavy, with a low of zero and 40 km/h winds, gusting to 60.

The forecast for Winnipeg on Friday is a high of 4, with wet flurries, and wind from the north at 40 km/h, gusting to 60.

Saturday is expected to be sunny, with a low of minus 4, and a high of 8.
