College, First Nation partner to train police up North

Assiniboine Community College has teamed up with St. Theresa Point First Nation to offer police training in the North.
A first class, consisting of 20 students from the communities St. Theresa Point, Garden Hill and Wasagamack, began a 33-week training course at St. Theresa Point on June 11.
The provincial and federal governments are funding some of the costs of the satellite program.
"This training will prepare recruits to apply with community police forces or the RCMP," said Justice Minister Andrew Swan. "These graduates will have a solid grounding in policing and will understand the needs of the communities they will be serving."
Swan, ACC representatives and Chief Eugene Wood of St. Theresa Point First Nation announced the new program at a news conference at the Legislative Building this afternoon.
Assiniboine Community College has offered a police training program for six years. Its graduates have mainly gone on to work with the Brandon Police Service.
Wood said that having a satellite program in his community will greatly assist in attracting recruits from northern First Nations. He said his community has been working to obtain the program for five years.
Graduates of ACC’s police studies certificate program in the north will be able to apply to complete further training to enter the RCMP or local police forces or take on positions in corrections or as sheriffs.
