Comedian Mercer's 'disgraced mayor serving set' includes Katz

RMR: Holiday Serving Set

Comedian Rick Mercer has taken aim at Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz during a sketch about embattled Canadian mayors.

The Dec. 4 episode of CBC Television’s Rick Mercer Report featured a sketch advertising a "disgraced mayors’ holiday serving set," featuring a platter bearing the likeness of London, Ont. Mayor Joe Fontana, who’s facing fraud charges, turkey holders bearing the faces of former Montreal mayor Gerard Tremblay and former Laval mayor Gilles Vaillancourt and a Toronto Mayor Rob Ford gravy boat, "brimming with self-entitled holiday goodness."

Mercer ends the fake ad with a dig at Winnipeg’s mayor.

"And as an added bonus, call now and receive the Sam Katz side dishes," Mercer says as the camera pans to a trio of square plates bearing Katz’s image. "Albeit, the Winnipeg mayor isn’t technically disgraced yet, but very well could be in the new year."

Katz faces a conflict-of-interest complaint over a 2010 Christmas party at a restaurant he used to own. A court date has been set for April 2.
