A city plan to spend $1 million to expand Sport Manitoba's downtown facility has cleared the first hurdle at city hall.
Council's protection and community services committee voted unanimously Friday morning to approve a $1-million contribution toward the construction of a fieldhouse at the Sport For Life Centre, Sport Manitoba's headquarters on Pacific Avenue, near the Exchange District.
The cash will come from $3 million already devoted toward the 2017 Canada Summer Games. The contribution faces executive policy committee and council approval later this month.
The Sport For Life Centre's fieldhouse will rise on an empty lot created when Sport Manitoba demolished a 20th-century warehouse building immediately west of its existing offices.
