Committee pitches 9-6 Sunday shopping
The province is consulting business owners and consumers on what hours – and other restrictions – will be changing.
A committee representing business and labour has recommended adding three hours to Manitobans’ shopping day on Sundays and certain holidays.
And the Selinger government appears ready to accept the committee’s recommendation.
The Labour Management Review Committee (LMRC) has proposed that municipalities be allowed to set Sunday shopping hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The expanded hours would also apply to Louis Riel Day, Victoria Day and Thanksgiving Day.
Currently, provincial law only allows stores to remain open between noon and 6 p.m., if a municipality passes an enabling bylaw.
The committee also recommended that retail workers should have the right to refuse work on Sundays, provided that they give their employer at least 14 days notice.
It said that provincial Employment Standards officers should have the authority to order that an employer compensate or reinstate an employee penalized for exercising their right to refuse work on a Sunday.
Family Services and Labour Minister has served notice that she will introduce amendments to the province’s Sunday and holiday shopping law on Wednesday. She is expected to comment on the LMRC report later this afternoon.
