Community centre shortfall no surprise, mayor says

A looming funding shortfall to maintain Winnipeg’s community centres is nothing new to the city, Mayor Sam Katz said following the first executive policy committee meeting after the end of summer prorogation.

On Wednesday morning, EPC voted to accept a report by the General Council of Winnipeg Commmunity Centres that notes $38 million planned for maintenance will no longer do the job. Katz said following the meeting he is aware of the shortfall and has been for some time.

EPC also voted to put off a plan to place service-sharing agreement with the R.M. of Springfield on hold, due to the absence of Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt, who had pushed for a deal to ensure fire-paramedic services reach areas of the rural municipality on the eastern fringes of Winnipeg.

After the meeting, Katz also told reporters the forthcoming review of the proposed fire-hall land swap will not be comfortable, but must be done to give taxpayers confidence in city processes – and dispel what he described as innuendos surrounding city hall.
