Council approves parking meter hike

City council approved a plan to double parking rates in parts of downtown Winnipeg in an effort to free up meters.

The city is poised to start metered parking one hour earlier, at 8 a.m., and extend meter parking to 8:30 p.m. in selected blocks around the MTS Centre. Rates are set to rise from a loonie to a toonie on high-use downtown streets.

Last year, the Winnipeg Parking Authority released a strategy to free up parking meters and to have 15 per cent -- about one in every seven parking spots -- available at any given time.
