Council to mull labour deal with firefighters' union

A new contract proposed for Winnipeg’s firefighters calls for wage increases in line with those granted to transit workers and general city employees.

On Wednesday, city council will consider a labour contract with the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg that calls for wage increases of two per cent this year, two per cent during the first half of 2013 and 1.25 per cent during the second half of 2013.

The two-year deal covers the period from Dec. 27, 2011 to Dec. 26, 2013 and will cost the city a cumulative total of $9 million. It has been under negotiation since November 2011.

The city’s contract with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 calls for wage increases of two per cent in 2012 and 2013, while the city’s contract with the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 500 calls for wage increases of one per cent this year and 2.5 per cent in 2013.

The Winnipeg Police Association and the Winnipeg Police Senior Officers Assocation will receive four per cent wage hikes this year.
