Mother, two children dead in Highway 3 crash, RCMP say

A mother and her two young children perished in a devastating highway crash early Friday morning.

At about 7 a.m., the 22-year-old woman was driving a Dodge Caravan east on Highway 3 outside of Manitou, Man. when her vehicle drifted into the oncoming lane. The Caravan smashed into a westbound truck and burst into flames.

The woman, her five-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter all died in the crash.

The truck driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP are on-scene and investigating the crash, including trying to piece together what may have caused the woman to drift into the westbound lane.

RCMP have closed a stretch of Highway 3 near the crash scene, about seven kilometres west of Manitou, and a detour is in effect. The detour is expected to remain in effect for much of Friday afternoon.
