Crown wants 10 year sentence for man convicted of violent carjacking attempt

  • Print

The Crown is seeking a 10-year prison sentence for a Winnipeg man convicted of a violent carjacking attempt of a stranger he happened to spot sitting in a parked vehicle.

Terrence Hanska, 24, was convicted earlier this year of several charges including robbery with a firearm, pointing a firearm and uttering threats. He was acquitted of a more serious charge of attempted murder. He returned to court Thursday for his sentencing hearing.

Hanska faces a mandatory five-year minimum under federal sentencing guidelines. The Crown says that should be doubled given the shocking nature of his crime. Defence lawyer Martin Glazer has asked for just five and-a-half years behind bars.

Hanska attacked the unknown 56-year-old man in the 1900 block of William Avenue West back in May 2012. The victim was sitting inside his truck, and Hanska used a hammer to smash the window. He then pulled out a handgun and pulled the trigger – but the weapon didn’t discharge.

The victim fled the scene and suffered no major physical injuries. Hanska was arrested later that night with help from the police helicopter which spotted him hiding in a yard. He has been in custody ever since.

Hanska is still facing another set of serious criminal charges – including attempted murder – for a home invasion which allegedly occurred just hours before the attempted carjacking. In that incident, he’s accused of shooting and wounding a 25-year-old man inside a Magnus Avenue residence.

A week-long trial is set for October. Hanska is presumed innocent.
