Diabetes a growing problem in Manitoba

Diabetes is a growing epidemic in Manitoba, where new research shows that 41 per cent of people have someone in their lives with the disease.

That’s slightly higher than the national average of nearly 40 per cent, according to the 2012 Sun Life Canadian Health Index.

To mark World Diabetes Day today, Sun Life has committed $5 million over five years to the University Health Network (UHN) to support research toward finding a cure, as well as prevention and care programs.

The World Health Organization has called diabetes the epidemic of the 21st century with approximately 4.6 million deaths around the world last year.

One in three Canadians is expected to be living with diabetes or prediabetes in less than a decade, according to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
