Unruly man cause of William Avenue shutdown

A 20-year-old man has been arrested after a bizarre incident at a Winnipeg hospital Saturday morning that shut down a block of William Avenue.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, a man was causing a disturbance at the Health Sciences Centre by shouting comments at staff members. Constable Jason Michalyshen said the suspect was acting belligerently and staff feared for their safety.

Officers were dispatched to the scene just after 7 a.m. and found the man with a piece of glass and a container of an unknown substance.

Michalyshen said some staff members who came into contact with the substance started experiencing watery eyes.

Fire and paramedics attended to the scene because of the substance, and the 700 block of William Avenue was shut down as a precaution.

No serious injuries were reported. The man was eventually arrested and charged with mischief endangering life, possession of a weapon and causing a disturbance. He's currently in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
