Driver dies after car slams into bus

WINNIPEG — A man died after he was critically injured when his car slammed into a bus on St. Anne's Road near Worthington Avenue at 8:40 p.m. Saturday evening, police said Sunday morning.

Witnesses said the Winnipeg Transit bus had slowed to drop of passengers at a stop on northbound St. Anne's just north of Worthington when a green Chevrolet Cavalier crashed into it. Its front end crumpled into and beneath the bus.

The car didn't seem to brake or take any evasive action, witnesses said.

A small engine fire broke out as firefighters and paramedics attempted to remove the man from the Cavalier, but firefighters put it out and broke open the car door.

There were no other reported injuries, and the bus showed little obvious damage.
