Executive director leaves Manitoba Police Commission

Brian Cyncora, hired by the Selinger government a year ago as the first executive director of the new Manitoba Police Commission, is no longer working in the position.

Commission chairman Rick Linden said Monday he could not comment on the situation as it’s a personnel matter.

Cyncora was on the job at the beginning of the month and is believed to have left within the past three weeks.

Linden said the position will be advertised shortly.

The province is also looking for someone to head up Manitoba’s new Independent Investigation Unit, which will investigate serious incidents involving police, including fatal shootings.

By law, the person cannot be a current or former police officer, but has to be well-versed in criminal law, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and be familiar with policing and First Nations justice issues. The closing date was Oct. 19.

Cyncora is a 30-year veteran of the Winnipeg Police Service whose first day on the job as director was Aug. 29, 2011.

He was unavailable for comment.
