Facebook helps Winnipeg police nab sexual assault suspect

Facebook is being credited with helping Winnipeg police track down and arrest a 25-year-old Winnipeg man accused of preying on a 13-year-old girl.

Police said investigators were contacted by Facebook at the end of July, about an inappropriate online conversation that had been taking place for about two weeks between the man and young girl on Facebook.

Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said the information provided by Facebook indicated that a meeting of a sexual nature was about to take place or had already occurred.

Facebook staff provided investigators with account information that led to both individuals being identified.

The man has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and luring.  He has been released on a promise to appear for his next court date.
