The redeveloped recreation facility at the former Kelvin Community Centre site in Elmwood will be named after speedskater and cyclist Clara Hughes, Mayor Sam Katz’s office is expected to announce on Saturday.
At an Oct. 26 press conference at the site, Katz and Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux confirmed $700,000 in funding to replace an outdoor hockey rink, build an accessible playground and place other amenities at the site of the former community centre, which was torn down in 2008. A subsequent city effort to sell some of the land was halted in favour of the redevelopment, which will be a satellite of Bronx Park Community Centre.
Last week, Elmwood MLA Jim Maloway said the former Kelvin site will be named after Hughes, but Katz and Lemieux said that was just an idea.
Katz’s office has now called another press conference for Saturday, with Hughes in attendance.
