Film shows impact of water management on Lake St. Martin

The University of Manitoba is hosting free public screening of the short film Flooding Hope: the Lake St. Martin First Nation Story Oct. 26.

It was written by Myrle Ballard, a Lake St. Martin First Nation member with a doctorate from the Natural Resources Institute, and Prof. Shirley Thompson.

The film shows how years of water management projects have affected the First Nation, resulting in their displacement last year, and a multimillion-dollar water channel beside their permanently evacuated reserve. It highlights the political, environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts as well as the role of the provincial government.

It’s being shown at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Wallace Building, 125 Dysart Rd., at the Fort Garry campus. The film has also been posted on YouTube.
