First Nations gather at The Forks for treaty payments

  • Print

First Nations people lined up at the Forks National Historic Site today to receive their treaty annuity payments. $5 bills were handed out to commemorate part of seven numbered treaties signed across Manitoba on behalf of First Nations Communities from 1871 to 1906.

First Nations ceded about 500,000-square-miles of land in exchange for annual compensation and recognized reserve land, fishing and hunting rights.

Those eligible for payment gathered under white tents with members of the RCMP, Parks Canada and Aboriginal Affairs.

"Us as aboriginals and as First Nations have to recognize that we are nations of people within a nation," said Elder Garry Robson in his opening remarks. "Canada has to understand what these treaties represent and what they mean."
