Folk Festival kicks off today

The five-day Winnipeg Folk Festival kicks off tonight at Birds Hill Park with headliner Feist who takes to the main stage at 9:10 p.m.

Thunderstorms this morning  forced cancellation of the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Winnipeg Folk Festival. The official kickoff was to have been at Old Market Square at noon, however, the nasty weather has wiped out the event.

Manitoba Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Flor Marcelino was to have officially opened  the Folk Festival at King Street and Bannatyne Avenue. The band Good Old War was to  perform at the opening ceremonies.

This morning campers cycled down Highway 59 to Birds Hill Park to set up their camp sites.

The Folk Festival takes place today through Sunday. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.ca or the Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store.

Patrons are encouraged to ride the free bus to and from Birds Hill Park. Visit www.winnipegfolkfestival.ca for all event details.
