Freight train derails near Oakville

A train derailment outside Oakville  last night led to sparks which started a grass fire.

The derailment of the eastbound freight train happened at about 9:30 p.m.. There were no injuries.

Trains were moving on a nearby track before 11:30 p.m..

The train derailed when it made an emergency stop, and the rear wheels of one of the cars went off the rails. The car, carrying a load of wheat, stayed upright in the derailment, CN Public Affairs spokesman Warren Chandler said.

However, sparks from the derailment started a grass fire next to the track, and caused some rail ties nearby to catch fire.

The blaze was extinguished by local crews.
