Mayor Sam Katz says the Friends of Sherbrook Pool should seek repair funds even before the City of Winnipeg holds consultations about the future of the shuttered inner-city facility.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday morning, Katz said an application should be made as soon as possible to seek provincial recreation funds to help repair the structure, which has been closed since November 2012 due to structural concerns. It requires $2.7 million worth of repairs to reopen, according to a city-commissioned assessment.
Katz said it is unlikely the facility will be torn down, given its historic nature. Consultations about the structure will determine the greatest recreational needs for the inner city, Katz said.
As a result, seeking repair funds even before the structure closes would be wise, the mayor said.
