Gio's closing

The GLBT bar Gio’s is closing after 31 years.

A statement from the downtown club said the last day of operation will be Saturday, Feb. 16.

Operated by a volunteer board, the Oscar Wilde Memorial Society Inc., Gio’s has been at the corner of Smith Street and York Avenue for 10 years.

The board cited social networking and "a more open and accepting society," as major factors in the decline of the long-time club.

The building will be demolished by the building owner, the board said, as part of a major redevelopment of the area.

The board said it hoped Gio’s will re-open in another location but if not, it will likely hold a social to pay down its outstanding debt.
