Girl hit by car in reverse still in hospital

The 10-year-old girl struck by a car in a bizarre accident Tuesday afternoon remains in hospital.
While Winnipeg police said the girl is now listed in stable condition, a family spokesman said the girl has extensive injuries and will need more surgery.
The girl and her mother were walking westbound on the sidewalk on Machray Avenue at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, when the girl was struck by a car going in reverse at high speed across a bank parking lot.
Police said the 86-year-old driver was backing out of a parking stall adjacent to the Bank of Montreal branch building when the Chevrolet Malibu accelerated in reverse across the parking lot.
The driver was unable to stop the car. He struck the girl as she was walking across the lot’s entrance and the car came to a stop when it struck a nearby tree.
The force of the collision knocked the girl into the middle of Machray Avenue.
Police said no charges have yet been laid against the driver but the investigation is continuing.
