Grand Chief pays tribute to late Saskatchewan elder Sinclair

Manitoba’s Grand Chief Derek Nepinak joined national aboriginal leaders in expressing condolences for the death of Jim Sinclair, a Saskatchewan elder who played a leading role in the recognition of aboriginal rights in Canada’s constitution.

Sinclair’s funeral is Thursday in Regina.

"Throughout my leadership, Jim Sinclair was a personal friend and mentor of mine," said Nepinak, leader of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

"I was well aware of the Warrior work Jim did during the Constitutional Conferences in the early 1980s and as an elder he always provided excellent direction and advice to the Chiefs of Treaty 4, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and at the National level," said Nepinak. "On behalf of the Chiefs of Manitoba, I'd like to extend my condolences to his family and all of those who loved Jim for the person he was and the work that he did."

Sinclair died last Friday, aged 79. He was a founding member of the Native Council of Canada, now the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, as well as the Métis National Council. He played a leading role in helping to set up a number of aboriginal and Métis institutions in Saskatchewan.
