Police are advising elderly Winnipeggers to beware of a phone scam in which con artists pose as friends or family members.
The callers claim they are in jail, or have some other critical emergency, and need money wired to his or her location. In most cases, the victim is encouraged not to say anything to anyone and to keep it a secret.
One elderly couple used a money transfer service to send $19,000 to help a friend in dire need. The friend was later found to be fine, and the money gone.
The Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit reports an increase in the number of complaints stemming from this caper since June and advise all care providers, children and grandchildren to discuss this scam with their elderly family members or those individuals who they feel may be susceptible to these pressure tactics.
