Group calls on province to increase rental allowance
A coalition called Make Poverty History Manitoba called today for the province to increase the rental allowance to 75 per cent of median market rent.
"There is strong and growing agreement on this action as a public priority. Over 130 organizations across Manitoba and a range of sectors agree that an increase is long overdue and expect the province to ensure that all Manitobans have access to adequate shelter" said Kirsten Bernas, spokesperson for MPHM.
The group is asking the province to make a commitment in the upcoming throne speech and provincial budget.
Employment and Income Assistance recipients are provided with a rental allowance that has increased marginally since 1992 when compared to market rents which have gone up by approximately 60-70 per cent during the same period.
MPHM is highlighting its campaign today, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, as it believes access to affordable housing is one of the best lines of defence against poverty and social exclusion, said Bernas.
Furthermore, it provides a solid foundation for those who are able to access education and employment opportunities.
MPHM is a coalition of organizations collaborating to reduce and ultimately eliminate poverty and social exclusion so all Manitobans can achieve their full potential.
