Harvey Smith says improving streets from airport a waste of money

City hall’s focus on improving the streetscape along certain roadways from the airport are misguided, said Coun. Harvey Smith, because it ignores the main thoroughfare used by the taxi industry.

Smith told the property and development committee this morning that its efforts to transform the streetscape of King Edward Avenue and Sargent Avenue would be a waste of money.

Smith, who is a member of the Manitoba Taxicab Board, said the city has not consulted the taxi industry which prefers to use Ellice Avenue as the main thoroughfare from the airport to downtown.

"You haven’t talked to the taxi cab owners," Smith (Daniel McIntyre) said. "The taxis go down Ellice. Regardless of what you say, they’re going to continue going down Ellice. It doesn’t make sense to have routes that no one will follow."
