Hearing begins in doctor sex assault trial

A trial is underway for a Winnipeg doctor who allegedly sexually assaulted a teenage boy at the Health Sciences Centre.

Walid Abdelhamid, 32, appeared in court Tuesday for the start of his three-week hearing. Lawyers dealt with a legal matter in the morning before adjourning until Wednesday when the alleged victim is expected to take the stand.

Abdelhamid was released on bail following his arrest only to vanish. He was returned to Canada in May 2011, nearly two years after he fled the country and went to Greece. He has remained in custody ever since.

Abdelhamid was working at Health Sciences Centre in 2009 when it was alleged he twice assaulted a teenage patient who was immobilized and high on morphine.
