Most highways open but snow-packed, slippery in spots

Caution is advised on Manitoba highways as the Colorado low bears down on the southern half of the province.

Several highways were closed in southwestern Manitoba and most others, including the Trans-Canada, were reported to be snow-covered or snow-packed with swirling and blowing snow and reduced visilbility.

Several rollovers have been reported, including a collision near Stonewall that has closed a portion of Highway 67 about two kilometres west of Highway 7.

The province is under a snowfall warning, with accumulations of up to 25 centimetres, mostly in the southwest. Ten centimetres is expected to fall in Winnipeg. Winds will gust to 50 kilometres an hour, from the north to northeast.

For this evening, expect the snow to taper off and winds becoming lighter, with a low of -10 C overnight.

Today's snowfall is causing some problems, indeed, but they pale in comparison to what was happening in Winnipeg exactly 47 years ago, when the city was hit with one of the worst blizzards in its history. In March 1966, snowmobiles were used to take doctors and nurses to work. Thousands of people were stuck overnight, forced to hole up in the Eaton and Bay department stores.

Environment Canada says the skies should clear Tuesday afternoon, with a high of - 8 C. And there's plenty of sunshine on the long-range forecast, with daytimes highs around -3 C to -7 C from Wednesday through Friday.
