Hospital pass for bus beheader makes world headlines

When Vince Li beheaded Tim McLean on a Greyhound bus in 2008, the killing made headlines around the world.

And not surprisingly, the decision to grant Vince Li temporary passes from the Selkirk Mental Health Centre Thursday was a story that spread well beyond the shores of Canada.

Google tracked thousands of mentions of Vince Li across the web yesterday, and the story of his escorted community visits appeared in nearly 300 media outlets in the search giant's news aggregator.

"Man who beheaded, ate fellow passenger on Greyhound bus in Canada wins bid to leave grounds of mental hospital," was how the New York Daily News played the news of the latest development in the story.

USA Today was also on the story with the following headline: "Greyhound bus beheader wins right to leave mental hospital." The same Associated Press story ran on internet giant The Huffington Post, titled "Vince Li, Man Who Cannibalized Tim McLean, Allowed To Leave Mental Hospital." and in outlets as far flung as the Jakarta Post and the New Zealand Herald.

US television networks including CBS News and Fox News also picked up the story.
