Suspect rams police car

An impaired driving suspect drove into the side of a police cruiser while trying to flee Saturday afternoon, Const. Eric Hofley said Sunday morning.

Police observed an erratic driver at Aikins Street and Flora Avenue around 5:30 p.m. The AIR1 helicopter followed him to Elgin Avenue and Isabel Street, where he rammed a cruiser, causing unspecified damage.

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Neither officers nor the suspect were injured during the incident.

A 36-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with flight from police officer, two counts of assault peace officer with weapon or causing bodily harm, impaired driving, failure to provide a breath sample and drive without a licence. He has been detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
