Don't park on snow route, ban's in effect

THE overnight parking ban on designated snow routes went into effect at 2 a.m. today.

The ban means that vehicles parked on snow routes must be moved off the street by 2 a.m., prohibiting overnight parking from 2-6 a.m. until March 1.

The designated snow routes, marked as such on street signs, are the first ones plowed during a snowstorm.

"Though our city has seen favourable weather this November, it is important that the snow route overnight parking ban be implemented to ensure that our snow-clearing crews can quickly react to the onset of winter in an effective manner," Brad Sacher, director of public works, said in a prepared statement. "Clear roads improve traffic flow, improve safety for the motoring public, and ensure emergency vehicles can travel the city quickly and safely."

Vehicles left overnight on a snow route can be ticketed and towed.

Deer hunter takes rifle shot in calf

A Virden man was taken to hospital Saturday after being accidentally shot by a hunting buddy.

Police said the incident occurred Saturday morning, when three young men were hunting deer near Cromer, in the RM of Pipestone. One of the men was putting his rifle into his vehicle when it fired, striking his 27-year-old companion in the calf of his right leg.

The victim was first taken to hospital in Virden, transported to a Brandon hospital and then taken to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Police said the wound is not considered life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation.
