Aircraft lands hard
AN air ambulance was badly damaged, but no one was injured when the plane sustained a hard landing early Wednesday morning.
According to initial reports made to Transport Canada, SkyNorth Air was about to land at the Richardson International Airport at about 2:30 a.m. when the Beech King's landing gear collapsed. The aircraft sustained substantial damage and another flight slated to land had to pull up at the last moment and be diverted to another runway.
Three crew members and a patient were uninjured.
The runway was closed until about 6 a.m.
CO poisoning blamed
MANITOBA'S chief medical examiner confirmed Wednesday St. Adolphe resident Bill Senderewich died of carbon monoxide poisoning last week.
Senderewich, 59, was found unconscious Dec. 9 at the St. Adolphe Motor Inn, which he owned and operated. He was rushed to a Winnipeg hospital, where he died on Dec. 18.
Chief medical examiner Dr. Thambirajah Balachandra said carbon monoxide -- a tasteless, odourless, and colourless gas toxic to humans and animals -- leaked from a faulty furnace at the inn.
He said Workplace Safety and Health has shut down the furnace until it is repaired.
Police arrest five
FIVE boys have been arrested after a crime spree by a gang of North End thugs.
A 12-year-old, two 14-year-olds, a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old face numerous charges in connection with a series of robberies dating back to Dec. 10.
According to police, four suspects invaded a residence in the 300 block of Aberdeen Avenue Dec. 10 between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., ransacking the home, assaulting the resident and leaving with prescription medication and some of the victim's jewelry.
Six days later, one of the suspects returned to the Aberdeen home and smashed out a window before fleeing.
That same day, one of the suspects allegedly stole a vehicle from a gas bar on Salter Avenue, police said, and ultimately became involved in a hit-and-run collision in Tuxedo.
On Dec. 20 at about 3:30 a.m., three of the suspects forced their way into a home on Machray Avenue and confronted three people inside with a machete, according to police. One of the residents was physically assaulted and the trio stole some electronics before fleeing in the stolen vehicle.
Almost three hours later, three suspects allegedly returned to the scene of their first crime in the 300 block of Aberdeen Avenue, forcing their way back into the home with the machete and a fake gun.
Three people inside the home were confronted and the home was ransacked again.
The suspects fled with electronics in their stolen vehicle.
All five are now in custody.
