Standoff at West End house ends after intruder arrested

A police standoff in the West End ended this afternoon with a man taken into custody.

The incident began just after noon Friday, when a break-and-enter triggered a residential alarm on Simcoe Street.

A source familiar with the incident said the alarm company sent a staff representative to 537 Simcoe St., where a man could be seen inside the home carrying a hammer.

Police were notified and then the homeowner arrived, who confirmed he did not know the individual inside.

Police set up positions around the house but the suspect refused to come out.

Firefighters were called to the scene when a small fire broke out inside the home.

Police said the situation ended at 2:20 p.m. when the suspect was taken into custody.
