Jim Carr wins Liberal nomination for Winnipeg South Centre

  • Print

The federal Liberals chose Jim Carr Monday night to carry their banner in Winnipeg South Centre in the next election.

The nomination meeting was held at the Centro Caboto Centre and more than 2,000 members were eligible to vote.

The other candidates for the Liberal nomination were Maurice Alexander and Karen Taraska-Alcock, widow of the late Liberal MP Reg Alcock.

Carr, the former head of the Manitoba Business Council, will take on incumbent Winnipeg South Centre MP Joyce Bateman, who was acclaimed Monday to run for the Tories in the next election, scheduled for 2015.

Bateman beat former Liberal MP Anita Neville by fewer than 1,000 votes in 2011.

The NDP has yet to nominate a candidate in the riding. Dennis Lewycky ran for the NDP in 2011, coming in a distant third.
