Katz out of gate after Labour Day

MAYOR Sam Katz doesn't plan to formally launch his re-election campaign until after the long weekend, his campaign manager Marni Larkin says.

Since the start of the formal campaign period in May, Katz has been trying to remain in the public eye without making policy pronouncements. He's been relatively successful at this strategy, aside from the public-relations disaster on the soccer pitch last week.

Katz has repeatedly maintained the mayoral campaign will not begin in earnest until September. But September is here.

A launch next week would mean the "real campaign" will only be eight weeks long. Winnipeggers go the polls on Oct. 27.
