Local group assessing potential Philippines help after earthquake

A local disaster relief group may try to send aid following an earthquake in the Philippines.
Fred De Villa, co-chair of the Winnipeg-based Fil-Can Disaster Relief Fund, said the committee is still trying to assess what help is needed following Friday night's earthquake.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey's website, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern coast of the Philippines on Friday.
De Villa said the coastal region is not heavily populated, and he hasn't heard of any Winnipeggers who have relatives in the area. He said the relief committee will meet on Sunday and discuss what they can do to help.
"The earthquake hit really hard," De Villa said. "We're trying to assess what kind of help they need because the last news we heard is they think a tsunami (could) hit the area."
Last year, the group sent more than $6,000 to the Philippines in the wake of a massive flood.
