Local heroes to be honoured at gala

  • Print

Five Manitobans will be recognized as local heroes next month.

The list of 2014 Manitoba Heroes was announced this morning, with Carson Shields, Jordan Bighorn, Ace Burpee, Susan Krepart and Lyle Bauer the recipients of this year’s honours. The five individuals will be celebrated at a gala dinner at the Fairmont Winnipeg on Sept. 27.

Shields, a victim of hazing when he played junior hockey, went public with his story and now shares his anti-bullying message with youth across the province, while Bighorn serves as a project manager for the Pathways to Education, a student support program that assists youth during their journey to graduation.

Burpee’s charitable work is well-known in local circles. The radio personality, a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal, uses his celebrity status to help drive numerous fundraising initiatives throughout the province.

Krepart made headlines last year when she organized a baby formula drive for Winnipeg Harvest on her Facebook page. To date, that small endeavor has grown to over $26,000 in cash donations and another $10,000 worth of baby formula raised.

Bauer, a former Winnipeg Blue Bombers player and executive, started the Never Alone Foundation after seeing the hardships cancer-stricken families faced during his own battle with the disease in 2004. The foundation has raised over $800,000 for various cancer agencies in Manitoba.

The gala dinner will feature special guest presenters, both silent and live auctions, local artists, musicians, and community leaders. Proceeds from the event will support programs at Siloam Mission, KidSport, and the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Organization.
