MPI has no business in road repair decisions: Pallister

Manitoba Public Insurance should stick to its mandate and leave road repair decisions to the experts at the provincial Infrastructure and Transportation Department, Conservative Leader Brian Pallister said this morning.

"MPI exists to protect people when they have disastrous circumstances strike them, to protect individuals who are injured and to make sure that they do their job effectively and well...," Pallister said at a news conference at the Legislative Building.

The Crown corporation should stick to that, he said.

"The best government operations in the world are the ones that do their job well," Pallister told reporters. "The best governments in the world are the most transparent and focused governments. When people in government lose sight of that then their governments start to suffer and most importantly the people who pay the freight start to suffer too."

In a news release, the Conservatives said MPI is looking at funding infrastructure upgrades to protect the NDP government from making tough decisions to balance the budget.

"Make no mistake, MPI has been directed to do this and any suggestion otherwise is naive," the release said.
