Malathion fogging planned for Portage la Prairie

Manitoba Health has ordered malathion fogging in Portage la Prairie after a high number of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were discovered.

The number of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, which can carry the virus, reached a level in Portage that triggered the province to issue the fogging order, a press release said. The fogging will take place within the Portage city limits and a three-kilometre area surrounding the city.

The order comes a day after two blood donors were found carrying the West Nile virus during routine screenings by Canadian Blood Services. So far, 48 mosquito samples from 17 communities across the province have tested positive for West Nile.

Manitoba Health is reporting a high risk of exposure to Culex tarsalis mosquitoes throughout southern Manitoba and suggests people take steps to reduce the risk of mosquito bites, even when no mosquitoes appear to be in the area.
