Man charged after cellphone found recording in women's washroom

  • Print

A man hoping to catch a glimpse of a co-worker on camera was caught red-handed by the victim earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Winnipeg police responded to an indecent act call at Midtown Car Wash on Gertrude Avenue.

Initial investigation revealed that an 18-year-old woman located a cellphone that was actively recording her in the bathroom. The phone was hidden in a towel and placed in the women’s washroom.

Further investigation linked the phone to a 21-year-old man who works with the woman.

The man is facing a number of charges.

He was released on a promise to appear.

The manager of Midtown Car Wash said today that the male employee was terminated immediately and that the female employee "was shook up" but will return to work soon.

"This is a very serious matter that we won’t tolerate here," the manager said. He also referred to the case of voyeurism as an isolated incident.

The manager said the male employee initially denied the phone discovered in the washroom was his. His name was found on the phone's screensaver, however. He later confessed to his involvement.

The women's washroom under investigation is used by Midtown staff and customers. The single female employee is believed to have been the only victim of the voyeur, the car wash manager said.
